The jury, composed of the members of the Scientific Committee of the ECSC, decided in this second edition to award the prize to Dr. Piero Bonissone, Chief Scientist at the multinational General Electric Global Research.

Dr. Piero Bonissone is a pioneer in the practical application of Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Intelligence, Soft Computing and Approximate Reasoning. He has made outstanding contributions to the field of Hybrid Systems as tools to solve real-world problems. The publication in September 1999 of his paper "Hybrid Soft Computing Systems: Industrial and Commercial Applications" summarizes important industrial applications of such systems.

Dr. Bonissone is also Adjunct Professor at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and the International Fuzzy Systems Association, and author of over 150 scientific papers published in international journals, conference proceedings and books, of 37 patents licensed by the U.S. Patent Office and 41 applications in process.
