Biography:
Michio Sugeno received the B. S. degree in physics from the University of Tokyo, Japan, the Dr. Eng. degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the Honorary Doctorate from Polytechnical University of Madrid, Spain, in 1962, 1975, and 1998, respectively.
From 1962 to 1965, he was with Mitsubishi Atomic Power Industry, Tokyo, Japan.
From 1965 to 1977 he was a Research Associate of control engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology.
From 1977 to 2000, he was an Associate Professor an a Professor of systems science at Tokyo Institute of Technology.
From 2000 to 2005 he worked at the Brain Science Institute, RIKEN, Saitama, Japan as a Team Leader. Currently he is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan.
Dr. Sugeno was President of the Japan Society for Fuzzy Theory and Systems for the term 1991-1993 and also President of International Fuzzy Systems Association for the term 1997-1999. He received a Pioneer Award in fuzzy systems from IEEE Neural Networks Council in 2000.
